Roméo et Juliette

For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.

Everyone is buzzing about it, and I guess it's time for me to fly into the conversation.  For those of you who know me well, it should not come as a surprise that I am utterly devoted and obsessed with Shakespeare and (some) of his plays.  Romeo and Juliet has always been a favorite of mine -- but not in the traditional sense.

"The greatest love story ever told" is not how I would describe the pathetic relationship between Romeo and his infatuated love Juliet.  True love?  I think not.  Yet Shakespeare (the genius that he is) is truly a poet and his writing is utterly breath-taking in this classic.  I read this play at least once a year, and don't think I will ever get sick of it.  I do not condone the behavior between the two "star-crossed lovers" nor do I believe in the dramatic unfolding of the play, but I cannot get enough of the words pushing out of the paper and into my head, creating these stunning portraits of scenes that can only be painted by a true artist.

That being said, there has been countless adaptations of this play, and below are the trailers for the most famous.  With my commentary on them; of course.

First of all we have the classic 1968 adaption by Franco Zeffirelli starring Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey.  A truly beautiful film.  They kept close to the original writing and cast the two leads flawlessly.  It is always hard to remember how young Romeo and Juliet were written as, so by casting a 17 and 15 year old, Zeffirelli succeeded in refreshing all of our minds.  Makes the silly love-aspect of the play a little more bearable.  Young love *sigh*.  The lines are delivered naturally and the story unfolds nicely.  Although the film does get a little dry and boring near the end, this will still be one of my favorite adaptations of this play.

Next we have arguably the worst film Leonardo DiCaprio has ever been in, if not the worst film ever made.  The horrendous adaptation by Baz Luhrmann starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes (1996).  Although many describe this film to be a masterpiece, I find it dreadful and just watching the trailer made me cringe.  It was a failed attempt to modernize Shakespeare's work, lacking the right flair it needed to make it a spectacle (a la The Great Gatsby), and also lacking the right translation from the original play to more "understandable English" *shivers*.  Let's just say I wasn't too keen on the whole idea of modernizing a vintage play.

But of course I judged too soon, because only two years later in 1998 John Madden along with the phenomenal Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes blew my mind with a (honestly hard to explain) adaption of the play.  Not a direct telling of the play, but a very well-written story with two plots woven into one seamlessly.  I cannot express my love for this movie through a simple blurb.  The way the characters came alive and naturally portrayed the making of Romeo and Juliet as a play just makes me clap my hands together in giddy joy.  All of the actors were superb, and the storyline was epic.  (The trailer doesn't nearly do it justice.)  If you haven't seen this film, I highly recommend it.

And finally, the one we've all been waiting for.  The most recent attempt at rekindling the original jewel in it's most basic glory.  I have not seen this film yet, so a review will be coming shortly but the trailer looks promising.  Although I must admit the gorgeous Ed Westwick may have nudged my opinion in one way over the other... (What can a girl do?)  I'm excited (and frightfully nervous) to see how this new piece will unfold.

Ghibli strikes again.

Watched The Great Gatsby recently and was fortunate enough to watch the trailer for Studio Ghibli's two new films -- coming this summer/fall!!

Anime-film making sensations Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata have each created a brand new film for me to watch, fall in love with and proceed to quote, think about and love for the rest of my life.

Miyazaki's new film "風の立ちぬ" will premiere on July 20th 2013 in Japan.  Kaze no tachinu is a film based on his manga series about the life of Jiro Horikoshi, the designer of the Zero Fighter airplane.

Other classic films by Miyazaki include: My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Princess Mononoke (1997), and Spirited Away (2001).

Takahata's new film "かぐや姫の物語" is a film adaptation of the classic Japanese folktale of the bamboo cutter and the princess he finds in a bamboo stalk who is the princess of "the capital of the moon".  This film will premiere in Japan in the fall 2013.

Other classic films by Takahata include: Grave of the Fireflies (1988), Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984), and Pom Poko (1994).

The Great Gatsby

Finally was able to watch this marvelous film.
That's right -- I LOVED IT.

I was super skeptical since I absolutely hated the Romeo + Juliet (1996) film and I was dreading that this classic book would also be ruined with the touch of the modern devil's trident.

Fortunately the film was completed with superb taste, class and just enough flair.

The way the eye was drawn in through the movement of the camera (Moulin Rouge! anyone?) and the sparkle and glitz of it all WITHOUT losing the classiness of the story.

And the music.
Same idea but backwards.  Taking modern songs and twisting them to fit the 1920s flappers era.
Bought the Deluxe Edition as soon as I got home.

I am just so so happy!
I must say though, I don't know if I will like
watching it on my computer screen.. I think the
large theater allowed the film to come alive and
I don't know if that can translate on a smaller screen.

But I must say, Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan were phenomenal along with Elizabeth Debicki (who is she!?), Isla Fisher (small role but lasting impression), Tobey Maguire (will always be spiderman to me...), and Joel Edgerton.

Holiday Films

The Family Stone: An uptight, conservative, businesswoman accompanies her boyfriend to his eccentric and outgoing family's annual Christmas celebration and finds that she's a fish out of water in their free-spirited way of life.

Four of my very favorite Christmas-Season movies...
All descriptions from IMDB

Love Actually: Follows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely and interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England.

The Nightmare Before Christmas: Jack Skellington, king of Halloweentown, discovers Christmas Town, but doesn't quite understand the concept.

The Holiday: Two women troubled with guy-problems swap homes in each other's countries, where they each meet a local guy and fall in love.

Cloud Atlas

“My life amounts to no more than one drop in a limitless ocean.
Yet what is any ocean, but a multitude of drops?”
― David Mitchell ―

Cloud Atlas (2012)

"An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution."

I watched this movie last night and was blown away.
The actors did a brilliant job portraying multiple characters in different roles.
The special effects were phenomenal.
It left me with a filled but heavy heart.

I definitely recommend it.

Black Swan

Finally watched Black Swan...  Everyone has been recommending it to me for the longest time, but I wasn't convinced it would be a good film!!  I wasn't satisfied with the film...  A bit too ..bleh? But  I'm a huge fan of Natalie Portman as an actress, and I think Mila Kunis is gorgeous.  What a duo in a film!

I love everything about this film.  I adore that they kept the old-fashion feel with the illustrations, mixing it in with modern music.  I love Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know".

La belle endormie

La belle endormie
The Sleeping Beauty (2010)
A young princess is the subject of a tug-of-war among witches, as each struggles to find the suitable antidote to a death sentence inculcated by an evil sister.
Director: Catherine Breillat
Writers: Catherine Breillat (screenplay), Charles Perrault (story)
Stars: Carla Besnaïnou, Julia Artamonov and Kerian Mayan

This looks like a quirky version of Sleeping Beauty - a Disney classic.  I can't wait to watch it!  The entire movie looks so beautiful, but it also seems kind of dark.
Catharine Breillat is a Director to look out for!! Check her out on IMDB.

Life in a Day

"What happens when you send a request out to the world to chronicle, via video, a single day on Earth? You get 80,000 submissions and 4,500 hours of footage from 192 countries.
Producer Ridley Scott and Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald took this raw material
— all shot on July 24, 2010 —
and created Life in a Day, a groundbreaking, feature-length documentary that portrays this kaleidoscope of images we call life.
National Geographic is bringing it to theaters starting July 24, 2011.
Prepare to be amazed"

I remember seeing the advertisements for the video submission on youtube last year-- I can't believe it's already been a year!  This looks like an amazing film, I don't know how they were able to look through all the different videos and choose the specific clips to be in the movie...  A true piece of art only achieved through hard work, persistence, and genius.
